Sustaining infrastructures

Coordinators: Bianca Kramer, Bárbara Rivera López (Barcelona Declaration)

This working group focuses on the sustainability of the infrastructures that enable open research information. Its goal is to empower signatories (institutions and funders) to support these infrastructures, recognizing that lasting openness depends on stable and coordinated resourcing.

To support this goal, the group explores how institutions and funders can strengthen their role in sustaining open infrastructures, and how shared learning across institutions and infrastructures can inform more sustainable approaches.

The group’s work is organized around activities that support institutional decision-making and shared learning.

Activities

  • Synthesize insights from knowledge-sharing meetings with related initiatives and open infrastructures
  • Build and maintain a case repository documenting sustainability approaches across infrastructures and institutions (structured profiles of infrastructures and institutional implementation journeys)
  • Formulate key questions and decision points to support institutional implementation
  • Facilitate mutual learning and knowledge exchange across institutions

Outcomes

  • Two stakeholder sessions exploring how open research infrastructures are sustained and how different actors across the ecosystem contribute to their sustainability.
    • Open Infrastructures, with participation of OpenAlex, OpenAIRE, and OpenCitations (recording / slides).
    • Related Initiatives, with participation of Invest in Open Infrastructure (IOI), SCOSS, and TSOSI (recording / slides).
  • Public webinar “How POSI v2 Guides The Sustainability of Open Infrastructure Organisations” (blogpost).
